The Naked Truth

Originally posted in The Monthly Breeze

Once upon a time ago in a galaxy called Hollywood, your favorite upwardly immobile African American homosexual in an unbridled show of affection and horniness for his boyfriend allowed himself to be photographed in the buff. And we're not talking Playboy "Art" shots with soft lighting or a furry kitten gently resting upon dramatically lit supple skin. We're talking full boogie post coital open orifice money shots with vodka bottles, audio cassette cases and that old "Isobel" poster of Björk kissing herself in the background. And as is the nature of everything regrettable done in life, at the time… it was great, it was nasty, it was FUN. Years later after sobering up/growing up I now consider it to be stupid, stupid, stupid. I recently came upon these pictures not too long ago while perusing some old backup files I have kept over the years. I have always considered these pictures to be the bane of my existence and the anchor to an otherwise aerial life. I imagined my eventual happiness to have the obligatory Halle Berry/Sandra Bullock Oscar suffix whereas the greatest thing in the world happens only to be followed by the worst thing in the world to happen. There I am, Toni Morrison giving me a hug after I accept my Nobel Peace Prize, then the next morning, there I am on the front cover the LA Times, all of the 400 pounds that I was at the time, with parts of my body showing that typically only my proctologist, my ex-boyfriends or a few lucky gentlemen down in Atlanta during 2009 pride have seen with the headline, "BREEZE IN THE BUFF" or "BIG BREEZE TINY DICK" or "NOBEL REVOKES PRIZE STATING, 'THAT AIN'T NOWHERE NEAR PEACEFUL!'"

M3 Co-founder James Butler Answers the Twenty Questions

1. What is your full name? Do you have a nickname no one calls you anymore? My Full Name Is Justin James Butler, I normally go by James. I hear people say consistently that they like Justin better, but I prefer James. In high school, I was J-Dog I don't know why they called me that but I just went with it, at work some employees call me J-Money and yet again I don't know why but whatever floats their boats.

2. If given the choice of any person alive or dead with whom would you want over to dinner as a guest? Why? I have so many choices to this question, but I have three major one Seth Macfarlane, Aaron McGruder, Kevin Micheal Richardson. I want to know more about them, and I would ask them questions about there life, their entertainment beginnings, and any insights about life they have learned along the way. But most likely I would be a die hard fan boy that will be drooling out the mouth and star struck. The off the wall ideas that will be passed around, the funny conversations, and good food along the way.

The Anatomy of Freedom: The United MIstakes of American Free Speech

This is a love story. The object of affection is Freedom and the endless, tiresome, interminable and sometimes fruitless pursuit of it. It begins with the Male Media Mind (M3) blog, an online resource portal dedicated to unifying the Black Bear community through dialogue, insight, creativity and knowledge.  As a facilitator for some of M3's social media outlets, I have seen a countless number of suitors try to court Freedom in the most heavy-handed, juvenile and impotent manners possible. Much like a little boy approaching a grown woman with a handful of muddy dandelions in an effort to accumulate a quantifiable relationship, patron after patron have approached us with abominable posts ripe with vulgarity, derision and abhorrence in an effort to cohabitate with the forum of free speech that we provide, only to be summarily smacked down with the intonation of, “We have no need for your shitty weeds little boy, grow up, try harder then come back.”

Love on Top... and Bottom (and sometimes Versatile)

While navigating through the emotional highways and byways of my current relationship, I have inevitably (and sometimes irritably) stumbled upon the vestiges of past relationships; both torturing and amusing myself by the lessons learned and the mistakes made. One relationship in particular that was questionably over-documented in conversations and journals (both public and private) is the one I shared for several years with a gentlemen I have always referred to as Dean.

While malady coursed through pretty much every aspect of that relationship, one of the main issues (that many of the other problems eventually funneled down into) was our shared passive aggressive navigation of sexual practices. We fell into the eternal quandary that has stifled, quelled and exasperated male homosexual couples since the beginning of time, “Who is going to be the top? Who is going to be the bottom?”

Nerdy Black Bear Trailer Review: Maleficent

I have been a big supporter of Disney since I was a youngster, from Disney's amazing award winning movies to the popular kid shows, Disney has proven time and time again that they know what people want to see. Well? Disney might bring that magic and talent to their new movie maleficent. I have seen some doubtful comment from people thinking that the movie will be to dark for Disney fans. In my opinion it is a great fit for Disney. Because people do not realize that there a side of Maleficent people have not seen, so telling her whole story might change your thought on her, and how she act in the sleeping beauty story, and lets be serious for just a moment, we have seen darker intense moments in the Disney universe for example death has been one of the major theme of some movies if you don't believe me go back to some of your favorite childhood movies and watch carefully to some scenes in the movie you might be surprised what you have overlooked. And if you want to go deeper into fairy tales history there is a very darker side to fairy tales, but that story will be covered in my next post.

Silence of the LAMs

I've been thinking a lot about social media since the one year anniversary of M3. When writing the retrospective, there was large sections of complaining I had to remove in order to keep the tone of the piece positive. I have shifted much of my attention away from writing and toward promotions and editing. I spend a lot of time on Facebook discussing and gathering topics we will write and discuss each week. I'm generally a positive person, but some days test my resolve to remain optimistic. It was on one of these days that I ran across Anything for Likes. It was posted in the Facebook group by Darnell Anthony. I usually don't find the material he talked about that funny, but it really was exactly what I needed to see. I've been taking social media way too seriously. It was about time I take a breath and start poking fun at it.

Tough Love: Domestic Violence In The LGBT Community

So you hear about domestic abuse and usually there is one picture that comes to mind. You know the one.  A working class man, usually with a pot belly, is standing over a woman cowering on the floor somewhere in between the refrigerator and the sink. He straddles her with his fist clinched, poised to strike. She’s covering up a bloody mouth or holding a blacking eye with one hand while whimpering and begging her husband or boyfriend to stop plummeting her. Usually this said raging significant other is uttering insults and obscenities while wearing a sleeveless tee that is ironically his role’s name sake. On rare occasions, this picture is replaced with an enraged woman chasing a man with a baseball bat or a frying pan ready to do bodily harm. There is still yet another image that people rarely consider and the media almost never report is that of a man being battered by another man or a woman being beaten by another woman.
