What Is Hygiene?
Simply put it is a set of practices performed for the preservation of health. While in modern medical sciences there is a set of standards of hygiene recommended for different situations, what is considered hygienic or not can vary between different cultures. Some regular hygienic practices may be considered good habits by a society while the neglect of hygiene can be considered disgusting, disrespectful or even threatening. Beyond cultural norms, there are biological cues that we respond to such as signs of illness. It can be a sign of good mental health how well you take care of yourself. We're tuned to notice and subconsciously avoid people who could harm us or make us sick.
The face is the first thing people will notice. Skin care is a important factor for good health an finding the right products is key. The best way to find the right products for your skin is to go to the dermatologist, but if you don't want to go to the doctor as most men don't, find a well and trusting site to find your products that fits you but make sure the site is verified. If you're not sure go with a cleanser that is hypoallergenic and gentle on your skin. Use a toner that wil clean out your pours and kill bacteria and Get a moisturizer with SPF 15 to slow damage caused by the sun.
Next step is your hair. There are so many hair styles out there from the Bob Marley's dreads to the short clean cut hair, but I notice that some men don't maintain there hair by keeping it clean. There was many a time I've been near a dude and his hair ether stink or covered with dandruff. It's hard to hold your breath and dodge flakes at the same time. Many people think that washing your hair is enough, but the truth is it's not. Washing does clean your hair, but it can also dry your scalp. Finding a shampoo with a good moisturizer can clean your hair and keep your scalp moisturized.
Facial hair is a topic near and dear to the bear community and to me. A well groomed facial style can frame your face and make you more noticeable and attractive, but keeping it trimmed and groomed is a hassle but a necessary one. Having a full face of hair since my early teens, I've learned to become one with the beard. Just like your hair on the top of your head, your facial hair needs the same treatment so make sure when you wash and moisturize. Figure out how fast it grows and keep it trimmed. There's a fine line between ruggedly handsome and borderline personality patient.
This is the topic that started the whole hygiene post for me. Bad breath is everywhere. Last thing you want to do is scare someone away right when you speak to them. When you lean over to kiss your partner and you want to smell minty freshness not a trash disposal. Nothing is less sexy than if you smell his breath and lose your eye sight. Bad breath can be caused by so many things, but the main reason for bad breath is teeth and gum care. The first thing that needs to happen is going to the dentist every 6 months for a good check up. I can hear the men groaning "I don't need to go to the dentist I'm healthy", sure everything's fine until you bite into an apple and all your teeth break like glass. Your life. Your mouth.
The second thing you need is a good tooth brush, toothpaste, floss, and mouth wash. Finding the right tools can make your breath amazing and your mouth healthier. I know i sound like a damn toothpaste commercial, but some of you need this advise walking around terrorizing innocent people with your dragon breath. If by chance you don't get to brush your teeth mints are a good but temporary substitute, so make sure before you leave the house do a breath check because if you can smell it we can smell it
Washing Your Body
The last topic for today is washing your body, as The Bible says your body is a temple. and some of you need to mop and febreze your temple. I hear men from work and outside of work say that they can go days without washing or showering and there reasoning is, "If I don't stink then I don't need a bath". they may be true but you don't just take a bath to smell good you take a bath to get rid of germs and bacteria that build up on your skin as you move through out the day. Not cleaning your body can make you sick. People don't realize that germs and bacteria are everywhere. I may sound like a germophobe but that not the case in just know my facts. Sometimes we get used to our own odor. We're always in it and it become the background. It doesn't mean other people can't smell you.
Use a good soap with moisturizer. Scrub don't just wipe. It doesn't take that long, but be methodical and scrub your whole body down. Use deodorant. For big boys this is a must. We sweat more than most. Don't smell like moldy cheese. Keep it clean and you'll be surprised how healthy and more attractive you'll be.
