Idris Elba: The First Black Bond?

Idrissa "Idris" Elba is a British actor best known for playing Stringer in The Wire has been rumored to be in talks to play James Bond. The rumors are not new and were given new life when a co-star in Mandela said in The Huffington Post that Elba met with a longtime Bond producer to discuss the possibility of him becoming the first black James Bond.

The rumors are new to me, but have been floating around for more than a year now. Having not paid much attention before this blog I got really excited especially since Skyfall. Another reason the rumor persists is that Idris Elba’s star is rising thanks to his Golden Globe win for Luther and big box office roles in Thor, Prometheus , and the upcoming Pacific Rim.

Obviously, race plays a role in the discussion of whether or not Idris Elba might play James Bond, as Bond has been portrayed by a white actor over the span of 23 films and six decades. But would Idris Elba even make a good James Bond? He’s the right age, he's the right build, he's got the action star credibility, he’s English, and his acting talent and good looks should seal the deal. With the right wardrobe and grooming playing James Bond would be right perfect fit. Hense the rumors.

In October of 2011, Elba dismissed skin color as a real argument against his being cast.

“I don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”

Still, there’s no telling when precisely the meeting between Idris Elba and Barbara Broccoli took place, as Naomie Harris didn’t specify. It’s entirely possible those talks happened well before the studio committed to Craig for two more films.

Even if Elba doesn’t break the James Bond color barrier, fans of Elba will certainly still have plenty to look forward to with Pacific Rim , a third season of Luther, No Good DeedThor: The Dark World and, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

In 2009, Elba appeared on a six-episode arc of the American The Office, playing Charles Miner, Michael Scott's new boss. In 2010, he appeared in the action film The Losers in the role of Roque, the second-in-command of a black-ops team.  The same year, he appeared in the thriller Takers.

Elba plays the title role of Detective John Luther in the BBC television show Luther. Below are some links to the show as well as clips pictures from around the web.
